The Art of Recovery
THE ART OF RECOVERY will be a solo exhibition of paintings by Brian Hyman at Gardens of the World Gallery in Thousand Oaks, CA, from Aug 12 - Sept 23, 2025. The show is comprised of colorful and expressive paintings made during the artist's early sobriety. Through the use of found wood and mixed media in a style reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism, the energy devoted to the creation of these works was a cathartic means to find emotional regulation during a time of extreme uncertainty and inevitable transformation. The paintings visually represent an outer processing of inner thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and emotions as the artist overcame substance abuse issues, released limiting beliefs and conditioned behaviors, and learned to live a purposeful and peaceful life in recovery.

THE ART OF RECOVERY honors the power of art to facilitate the healing of mental health issues and substance use disorders. Artistic and creative forms of therapy – painting, journaling, photography, drawing, dancing, acting, music, and more – are an invaluable means to express what lives in the mind, heart, and body. May this show be a celebration of personal and collective resilience and determination, patience and discipline, originality and authenticity, courage and compassion. And may viewers be reminded that we are spiritually perfect just as we are; we can do anything our heart desires; and all things are possible for those who are honest, open-minded, and willing – one day at a time.
